Adult Ministries
Making a difference, one person at a time
Become an active part of our vibrant community through various opportunities designed to foster fellowship, spiritual growth, and service. Our adult ministries offer something for everyone, whether you are looking to connect with others, deepen your faith, or make a meaningful impact locally and globally.
Through our various ministries, you can build lasting relationships with fellow members, engage in enriching discussions and activities, and contribute to meaningful missions that make a difference in the lives of others.
Whether you are interested in joining a supportive fellowship group, participating in hands-on service projects, or exploring new ways to express your faith, our Adult Ministries provide a nurturing environment for personal growth and community involvement. We encourage you to explore the different opportunities available, get involved, and experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from being an active part of our church family.
Join us in making a positive impact, both within our local community and beyond.
United Women in Faith (UW Faith)
The denominational women’s organization, United Women in Faith, is a community of women whose purpose is to know God, develop a supportive fellowship, and expand missions. Our vision statement is turning faith, hope, and love into action on behalf of women, children, and youth around the world. We do many mission projects and earn money so we can impact local and global communities. A couple times during the year, we interact with other area United Women in Faith groups at other churches to share ideas and celebrate our mission. Our local unit consists of four circles: Sarah, Joy, Rebekah, and Martha. Each circle meets at different times throughout the month. Regular meeting times can help determine which circle best fits an individual’s needs.
- Sarah: 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday
- Rebekah: 7 p.m. on the fourth Friday
- Joy: 9:30 a.m. on the third Thursday
- Martha: 1:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday
For questions, please contact either of the current co-presidents: Myra Bowman or Barbara Trulson.
You are welcome to join at any time. Welcome!
Comfort Quilters
We quilt in the Chapel every Tuesday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. We have sewing machines, material, patterns, and other supplies needed to quilt. Donations are always welcome as well.
The group is open to the public and those of all skill levels.
If you don’t know how to quilt, we can teach basic skills. Non-sewers can tie quilts, press fabric, and help in other ways. We would love to have you come. Don’t think that your lack of experience means you can’t learn and join in on the great fellowship of quilting!
Contact: Barb Trulson 641-860-0314.
Please call before you come the first time to verify we’re meeting; sometimes we’re unable to quilt because of building conflicts.
We look forward to meeting you!

United Methodist Men (UMM)
The Garner UMM is a group of men that meet informally on the first Monday of the Month from September to May.
We plan and coordinate activities that support the needs of the church, including a Fall Fund Raising meal, planning and preparing a meal for a Family Fun Event, the Earl Beshey Dessert Auction and Bake Sale, and the Duesey Days Pie Stand.
We also do community clean-up events, and work on projects around the church. For further information, contact John Bowman.
Mats Matter
Come join us to work on mats that matter. This mission began in May 2024 when Alaire Willits from Midwest Mission trained several people at GUMC in the process of making sleeping mats from plastic bags. These mats are distributed locally and internationally to provide a barrier between an individual and the ground; they benefit those impacted by disasters and those experiencing homelessness.
Several tasks are involved in this process, including flattening, folding, and cutting plastic bags and the actual weaving itself.
The Mats Matter group meets on Thursdays from 1-3 p.m., but you can work on this at different times as well and can even complete some of the tasks at home. Those trained are happy to train others.
